Statement of Intent
The title Vesper, meaning the evening star or Venus, reflects my interest in the idea of the muse — a symbol of beauty that inspires but also invites contemplation. This project is my way of engaging with that legacy, while creating space for quiet observation of the body as both subject and sculpture.
The audience for my image set is art gallery visitors, collectors, and viewers interested in fine art photography, classical painting, and the representation of the female form. I intend for the audience to feel a sense of quiet contemplation and appreciation for the beauty of light, form, and texture, drawing connections to the timeless ideals of the feminine figure. Similar to the painters of the Renaissance and Academic traditions, such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Seignac, whose use of light and composition has inspired me.
Six fine art photographs will form a portraiture series depicting a clear narrative illustrating the flowing lines of the female body, shaped and revealed by controlled, sculptural lighting. The work focuses on moments of stillness, showing how artificial light can create depth, texture, and a sense of timelessness in the study of the figure.
I will capture the images in a studio environment using artificial light only, to allow precise control of shadow and highlight. I will work from carefully considered, eye-level perspectives in both portrait and landscape orientation to explore how composition affects the reading of form and space. The images will be staged to achieve a painterly, timeless quality, linking back to the controlled, deliberate approach of classical art. To capture the soft, fluid interplay of light and the natural curves of the body because this dialogue between shadow and illumination resonates with my fascination for the balance between concealment and revelation in the representation of beauty.
