Accidentally Rembrandt is a long-term photographic project born out of a fascination with Rembrandt lighting and the visual language of the Old Masters. What began as a technical exercise gradually evolved into a personal exploration of light, character, and art-historical reference.
For several years I focused on refining this distinctive lighting style, deliberately styling my sitters to echo the mood and compositional weight of classical portraiture. Simple props and modest costumes, sometimes no more than a bathrobe, were used to evoke painterly restraint, while at other times the illusion was intentionally disrupted by the introduction of contemporary elements, such as a can of Coke. These subtle interventions allowed the images to operate as tongue-in-cheek commentaries on the reverence often afforded to classical painting.
Over time, the project grew to nearly one hundred photographs. This selection presents a distilled edit of the series, highlighting both the visual consistency and the quiet humour that underpin the work, where tradition and modernity meet, sometimes accidentally, under a Rembrandt-like light.
